Residency Programme
A Veterinary Surgeon who wants to get to the top of his or her chosen field needs to be awarded a residency. A resident spends three years of intensive study under the direct supervision of an established specialist in either a teaching hospital or recognised private referral centre that meets strict minimum standards of equipment and performance. The equivalent position in human medicine would be a registrar.
At the end of a residency the veterinary surgeon usually takes a Diploma examination set by either the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons or European or American college, appropriate to the speciality. A diplomate can be truly regarded as an expert in their particular field of veterinary medicine.
At NKR Veterinary Specialists we are pleased to have been awarded the recognition of being permitted to run two resident programmes by the European Colleges, starting in October 2009.
Our surgical resident is Yvan Fourie BVSc MRCVS. Yvan has spent three years in general practice in the UK and one year as an intern at NKR studying surgery, medicine, ophthalmology and critical care.
