Critical Care Facilities

Injury or disease can make it difficult for some patients to obtain enough oxygen from normal air. We have an oxygen kennel in the treatment room and wards, as well as a mobile incubator with oxygen facilities suitable for cats and small dogs. Our on-site oxygen generator enables us to provide continuous oxygen therapy to any patient while in the comfort of their own kennel.

Critical Care patients often find it hard to maintain their body temperature. We have ‘Warm Touch’ patient warming systems that consist of disposable paper blankets into which circulating warm air is blown. They are used in human hospitals; we like them at NKR Veterinary Specialists because they make it easy to maintain body heat in anaesthetised and critical care patients.

We also use electronic intravenous fluid pumps wherever medication or fluids are provided continuously into a vein, just as in human hospitals. This is the most reliable and accurate way to administer fluids or medication to our patients.

Our nurses are the back-bone of our critical care facilities; they continually monitor the condition of critical care patients and work with your pet’s specialist or clinician to deliver the treatment plan. Every anaesthetised patient has a dedicated nurse monitoring the patient throughout the procedure, and until the patient is fully awake following the anaesthetic.
