European Specialist in Veterinary Ophthalmology
Rick joined the ophthalmology department at NKR Veterinary Specialists in 2006 and became Head of the Ophthalmology Department in 2009.
Rick is a Spanish national who pursued most of his education in the United States and United Kingdom. He first obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Biology in St Thomas Aquinas College in New York, and a DVM in 1999 after attending Ross and Louisiana State Universities. He then commenced his ophthalmology training in the United States and shortly after joined the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB), where he obtained his European veterinary qualification in 2002.
Since then Rick has obtained his RCVS certificate in ophthalmology (UK), and completed his residency training at the University of Glasgow and the Eye Veterinary Clinic in Herefordshire; he became a veterinary ophthalmic specialist when he passed his specialty exams in 2007 and was handed his Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists in the official ceremony held in 2008. He has also recently become a member of the Editorial Board for Veterinary Ophthalmology Journal.
Rick’s areas of personal interest are corneal and cataract surgery, and also teaching and lecturing, which he does at national and international meetings. Some of his work also includes publications in canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca, the effects of commonly used sedatives on tear production and the surgical reconstruction of eyelid tissues. Ongoing work includes a review and study of the combination of surgical and medical treatment of KCS related corneal disease in dogs and a study on iridociliary epithelial tumours in cats.
