Ophthalmology

temp

Veterinary ophthalmology is the discipline that deals with the pet’s eyes. Most conditions seen require some sort of operation but some are treatable using medicines, usually in the form of drops or ointment. A few cases need both surgery and medication. The tissues of the eye are very delicate and can be affected by other diseases. Eye problems are very varied and can include hereditary as well as acquired problems.

If you have an appointment to see one of our ophthalmology specialists you will have an initial one hour’s consultation in a relaxed atmosphere during which your pet will be examined thoroughly. The specialist will discuss with you the most appropriate treatment options available to help your pet’s condition.

Most patients do not require hospitalisation unless they require an operation. Cataract surgery patients, for instance, usually only remain in hospital for one or two days. In exceptional cases their hospital stay may need to be longer. Your pet usually needs to return for re-examination with the ophthalmologist until he or she is satisfied that specialist attention is no longer required.
