Dental & Oral Surgery

Veterinary dentistry involves the study and treatment of conditions affecting the teeth, gums, upper and lower jaws and all the other tissues of the mouth. Problems seen in this department include fractured teeth, decay, gum disease and oral tumours. Poor alignment of teeth due to breed characteristics and other congenital faults may result in an inappropriate bite. This may cause the dog or cat to be unable to eat normally or even be in pain each time it shuts its mouth. If spotted early a great deal can be done to correct such problems by removing particular teeth or applying braces.
At NKR Veterinary Specialists our dental facilities include; dental radiography, an air driven dental engine and a range of endodontics.
Procedures available include root canal filling, application of braces, total extraction (indicated for some gum conditions), repair of jaw fractures and removal of oral tumours.
If you are coming to see the dental clinician at NKR Veterinary Specialists your pet will have a thorough oral as well as a general health examination because some general medical conditions affect a patient’s mouth. The clinician will carefully explain and discuss with you all the options for your pet’s treatment. It is very likely that x-rays will be required for which your pet will need to be anaesthetised and we always try to do this together with necessary dentistry, all on the same day. This saves your dog or cat from having more anaesthetics than is necessary.
