Veterinary Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to produce a healing or health promoting effect. In recent times research has revealed much of the scientific basis of how acupuncture works and a “Western” approach has developed that is often used alongside the Traditional Chinese medicine system.

The main use for acupuncture is pain relief. It can safely be used alongside conventional treatments or as an alternative when drug intolerance or incompatibilities occur.

At NKR Veterinary Specialists we frequently treat osteoarthritis, muscle injuries, myofascial trigger points, spinal disease, feline cystitis and some chronic gastro-enteric problems related to anxiety.

Most animals accept the needles well and many fall asleep during treatment. There is little risk from acupuncture. It can only be administered by a qualified veterinary surgeon, preferably one that has studied and qualified in veterinary acupuncture just as we have at NKR Veterinary Specialists.

A typical treatment involves placing a number of needles that are left in place for between ten and twenty minutes. Sometimes a tiny, painless electric current is applied to pairs of needles to enhance the effect. Sessions are usually one week apart to begin with, then at longer intervals as progress is made.

Having thoroughly examined your pet at the consultation the veterinary acupuncturist will discuss with you the best options to treat your pet and recommend a treatment plan.
